Hi folks Just a simple question,I am making a start on the steam and exhaust pipes in the smokebox. The slim nuts on the copper pipes i think should be brass or similar. Will steel do here. Its just that I want to make some simple bits, from a change from the valve gear and I have no brass in the size needed.

Hi Mike,
I shouldn't think using steel will be a problem. They are only there to lock the assembly together so that the steam and blast pipes don't flop about. They are not exposed to steam so won't rust away.

Brass against steel is always a good combination in hot damp conditions. I used to use brass nuts on the (steel) exhaust manifold studs on my vintage cars and never had problems with them siezing - unlike steel nuts which often have to be cut off! Should be fine.
