A while ago, I bought some Simplex wheel and cylinder patterns off eBay ... they are a lot lighter to ship to the US than the CI items.
I have taken the patterns into a local foundry, and when asked what spec. of cast iron did I want, I was at a bit of a loss. I'll admit that must have realized that there must be different specs. just as there are for steel ... anyway, it appears that the cheapest is 30,000lb tensile strength, and they go up to 80,000lb ... he did assure me that porosity isn't a problem with any of the grades ... should I just go for the cheapest option?
Anyone else in the US or Canada needing some castings? (I'm already in touch with Robin Smith).

Strength isn't a problem - ask him for a grade that is easy to machine.

Good point ... I will ask them on Monday.
Robin Smith mentioned that Martin Evans recommends between 1-6% Nickel CI to reduce the rusting tendency.

The wheels I had cast were in SG (Spheroidal Graphite) Iron. I don't know what grade, but it was lovely stuff to machine. A search on the internet came up with the following spec. for different grades of SG iron. www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/s.j.bull/mmm314/matauto/sld015.htm It may help you decide. John
