Hi Baggo, Can you tell me please has the boiler been fitted to the Black 5 and has it performed well, also was a new superheater supplied, or did they use the old ModelWorks one. I may have to go down a similar route one day! Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob, Yes, the boiler was fitted and the loco was running again with no problems with the new boiler. We haven't seen the owner for a while now though! Helen made it to exactly the same dimensions as the original so it fitted in perfectly. I think it was put back with the original Modelworks superheaters. The old boiler had to be cut in half to get some dimensions for the firebox and it was pretty frightening what was revealed inside John

Thanks for that I think! Had mine tested to 2X NWP, last month, all OK. Wil have to wait and see what happens when I get some heat into it, will have to hold my breath and maybe some other bits! There must be some good un's about, they can't all be Friday afternoon jobbies can they!!! Next Easter is the time I am aiming for completion. Rob.

Hopefully, this was just a particularly bad one although others have failed in various places. Make sure you keep an eye on it when you do steam it and don't stress it by raising steam too quickly or running the water low. Good luck! John

Hi Nick, I took a few at the time. Our boiler inspector was going to clean it all up and take some more but I don't think he did in the end unfortunately. Basically, there was very poor penetration of the solder through the joints on the flanged plates and the stays. The boiler was also a poor steamer, probably due to the thickness of the tubes reducing the gas area considerably. The new Western Steam boiler, although made to the same design but with normal thickness tubes, steams so much better. You can see how bad our water is at Coalville! Attachments:
