This thread has been going on a bit: I thought I'd do a poll on the subject. First time I've done one, but I think it's in General Chat! JB

G'day JB I will not grace your poll. You are free to ignore the discussion on SS boiler, just don't open the thread. This is a discussion board on an engineering forum. We are not a Greenly Preservation Society so therefore we should be open to new ideas and techniques and be free to debate them. That is engineering, and I should know I are wun. There are SS boilers being used on the world's minature railways even if not in the UK. The AMBSC is obviously looking at them so they will not go away. There is a big wide world out there, perhaps if the UK had joined it it would not be in the position it is in today. Sorry, I been in an ascebic environement. Regards Ian FIEAust, CPEng

Don't apologise Ian: as you say this is a general forum open to sensible debate. If you care to look closely, I haven't opposed or ignored the discussion at all: there are opportunities for proponents of SS to vote as well as the protagonists: I was merely adding a little objectivity to the debate as well as having a bit of fun....... Time is also a dimension ;D
The text under the second option seems to miss a few characters.

I'm not opposed to SS boilers, but, as of now, we, in the UK can't use it, (without major issues regarding insurance) so I'll stick to copper.
In the future that may change, but before it does I would like to see some serious studies on the risks involved. ( The argument that "some countries do it" isnt really satisfactory when we are talking about something that could, in worst case, kill or maim someone. As for the numbers involved, we in the UK probably have more model boilers than the rest of the world put together, so we MUST ensure that they are safe.)
As for the "would I construct one", the answer for me is no. The primary reason is that, from what I have read, they need electric welding in one form or another, and I am not allowed to use that anymore. Would I buy a professionally built boiler? Perhaps, if I ever reach the stage of not being capable of making my own.

Havoc: the missing word is 'guidance' but the damn thing wouldn't fit it in and I can't amend it! JB

I went under the I know how to do it as I have an example here waiting to be fitted. Not made by me but by a shop with a long history in SS boiler making. They have supplied most of the boilers for the Naples club.
So now I have all three variants
Copper: Juliet, 2 Tiches, GN Atlantic, Hunslet 5" Steel: Hunslet 7 1/4" SS. Tich x2 (7 1/4")
I will be watching closely the performance of the SS one.

It's just that if I think of all the model engineering going on in USA, Europe, Australia, NZ, Japan, etc, etc it seems a bit unlikely!

Dave, I once spent a lot of time getting the best figures I could on model engineering activity throughout the world as as best as I could discover, that was the result.
Quite surprising, but then look at the popularity of preserved full-size steam here compared to elsewhere.

Well said Tonytrans , I thought I was the only one who found that remark un-necessary and ignorant !

Unnecessary maybe, ignorant it isn't. Probably too much near the truth to be funny.

I was under the impression that people from the UK had done rather a lot of visiting the big wide world – Australia being one of the more obvious results.
Whether I would class that as a success is for others to say. ;-)

Gentlemen I admit to letting frustration creep into my comments. It is interesting that JB, who originated the thread took my remarks in good grace, I trust you can do the same. We do need to reflect on why a nation that has the wit to give us "Yes Minister" can find itself so hide bound in legalities whilst its continetal bed-fellows can seemingly thumb their noses at the same regulations and directives. Maybe all the wits enigrated leaving behind the other half? As an Ozzie I can't forgive the Britts for cutting us off when you joined the Common Market. We have to que and show our passport at UK immigration to enter our mother country whilst them foreigners get in without being checked. Regards Ian

Guys, whilst the posts thus far are understandable, please can we try to keep away from politics etc, as it only leads to disputes.
