As I (unintentionally) stirred up a bit of a hornets nest with the Allchin boiler, here's another to have a look at cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120394510093&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohostingIs it me or does there seem a distinct lack of stays in this 'new' boiler? There seems to be only 6 stays per side in the firebox and no sign of any in the firebox tubeplate and doorplate. Also can't see any cross stays in the top part of the outer firebox wrapper. My impression is that it may have not been completely finished although the listing says it has been tested to 180psi and suggests it is ready for use. Assuming this loco is a scaled down version of the 5", the inner firebox is 3½" long. John

You are right there is only six stays on the sides. The spacing depends on the thickness of the wrappers and operating pressure, if the material is thick enough may be the stays are enough but surly the the cross stays are missing .In our code the only time one does not need cross stays is if the wrappers are round both outside and inside but stays for the crown to outer wrapper are required and they are missing.
