Hi folks . Another newbie looking for advice form the old hands . Just acquired a Boxford AUD MK 2 with Burnerd 5" chuck but key was lost. ( Ex school machine ) Tried a 3/8" socket extension which was too big so ordered a 5/16" key from RDG which is too small . Does anyone know what size the key should be and where can I get one ( spose I can grind something up but would prefer the correct one). I suspect the chuck will never have been off in years and does nt seem to want to move . Any tips ?

Take a proper measurement of the hole, you can get keys inbetween the two sizes eg 11/32" and 9mm. Rotagrip sell Burnerd chucks and spare keys www.rotagriponline.com/Jason

Thanks for that Jason
Looks like it is 11/32 with a bit of clearance Interesting site rotagrip but at £90 for a chuck key I think I will pass
Should get a chuck (c/w key) for that. Might be an Idea if I could get the old chuck off Looks like a job for the grinder this weekend

Try gripping a length of timber transversely in the chuck (ie., from front to back) to use as a lever. Lock the spindle and give the timber a whack. (anticlockwise)

G'day John
Don't forget to stick a rod though the chuck and spindle so that when the chuck does come undone it doesn't drop down on to the ways or your hand.
You may be able to find key stock in square section which will fit the chuck key holes. Try the square sections that are in door lock hardware, they pass through the locking mechanism and into the door handles.
Regards Ian
