Hello again.
My automatic centre punch could do with having a point which is about 1/2" - 1" longer. I was thinking of pulling it apart, making a new "punch" piece, and then re-assembing. But I can't work out how the thing comes apart in a safe manner without it exploding into pieces - big spring in there.
Has anyone ever done this, and if so can you provide any tips?
Thanks
Steve

Usually the end cap unscrews, and the body unscrews around the middle. The spring isn't that strong, but just to be sure wrap it in a cloth while you unscrew it.

Issue 47 of MEW has an article on restoring an automatic centre punch. A friend of mine found it very helpful in freeing up an old but treasured one. Wish I'd been able to read it when I was 8 and unscrewed my Dad's centre punch, letting all the bits escape to the furthest dark corners of the garage... James
