I needed some 18g x 1/4" springs for the bogie, so I thought I'd try my hand at making my own, something I've never done before. I did a bit of research first, the internet is a wonderful thing! The former is a bit of MS, centre drilled one end and a 55 hole cross-drilled 1/4 from the end to catch the end of the spring. The 'die' fits in the QC boring bar holder. set below centre height so that the bronze wire hits the former tangentially. I clamped a bit of brass behind the die to tension the wire. Select 2.5mm pitch, engage motor and miraculously, a perfect spring appeared! The spring was cut in half, the ends ground square using the former as a support against the grinding wheel, and they seem to work OK! Saves money too...... OK, I admit it, I did make a couple before I got the right spring pitch to take the load.....

Hi John - you certainly have a fascination for gold coloured things! ;D Now that you know you can wind springs easily, have a look at this site home.earthlink.net/~bazillion/compression.html to see how to do it "properly" with the ends of the springs "closed" like this buffer spring I made - DJ

Ha! I reckon JB's gone off to learn how to make "Proper" springs and will present us with a picture in the next day or so with a real one. DJ
