A friend over in the US is looking for some square headed set screws for some lathe tool holders. Size needed is M6 x 1 20mm long. For a look see at what he wants, www.waynebolt.com/over.htm bottom but one on the list shows the imperial equivalent. Any ideas where to get these? If available in UK, I can post them to him. Dave,
Why not use a set of Allen cap screws? If it's just a matching thing it'll be cheaper to change the lot.
If necessary keep the old ones for when the lathe is sold.

He could always make them from HT set screws by milling the heads to the size/shape required Jack

The only problem with Allen cap screws is that the socket fills up with swarf. I too, would love to learn of a source of square headed setscrews in the UK.

G'day Tell Thanks for the heads up about "bolts.com.au" Regards Ian No worries mate - I've used 'em a few times for various bits & pieces, not the cheapest place but the service is pretty good. It's the only place I could find spotting drills. I made a set of 'em for my 3 way tool post out of mild steel. That's 15 or 20 years ago and they are still in service, although they're starting to look a bit battered.

J&L had them listed as spares for their "select" brand Dickson type tool posts in their last catalogue but they are not in the new 9th edition, may be worth giving them a call.

Why not simple hex-headed set screws? I used to use a lathe with square headed tool post screws. The only tool we had was a simple handle with a square hole in it, we didn't have a square headed nut-driver. As I remember it was a real bitch because one could only ever get about a 90 degree swing each time. It's also quite simple to reduce hex-heads to square heads either with a mark one file or stick them (carefully) in the tool post and fly-cut four faces on them. You could even drill/tap 6mm down the centre of a bit of square steel, nut lock the set screws and mount that in the tool post and machine per four faces. QED
