Chimneys Is there anyone out there that has made a pattern for a large Locomotive or traction engine if so could you post a photo? At the moment I am struggling to make one for a 7 1/4 Tom Rolt. Thanks Sapper

Sapper,
Go have a look at the current Model Engineer (8-23 April No 4349 page 459). It's part two of a series but includes a load of photos of core boxes and stuff. He's making a half scale Burrell.

Or save yourself a trip to smiths and see the pics on Edwards site homepages.tesco.net/~jean.george1/gmcylinderpics.htmlAnd you can also see a pic of the chimney saddle for the same engine on the following www.goldmedaltractor.co.uk/machine1.htmlOn anything over 2" scale a traction engine chimney will be rolled, its just the saddle that is cast. You just need to make the pattern with a split down the center as a loco one is relatively short you may find it as cheap to cast it solid without a core as making a corebox, making a core and the extra time making the mould will be more than the cost of the extra metal. They are some great photos of the process of assembling a cored mould - not seen anything so complex before. Not sure if I could cast that complex - need quite a few more years on aluminum before progressing to iron - thanks for giving the link.
Cheers

Thanks all for the information. I have completed the chimney and a separate base so far. The next job is to make a mould for a tapered core. Once I get that done I will have to have a go at posting some pics. Sapper
