I couldn't resist this when it came up for sale - apparently a former museum exhibit to show how things work - though all traces of who made it, when, what the prototype was, etc have been lost. Any observations in that direction would be very welcome. As you can see it has wood in a few vital places where we might expect metal. My present thoughts are to use the wooden parts as patterns for metals parts and build it into a working engine, but a better job could be made with a prototype to fashion it on - especially as regards the cylinder. It stands about 9 inches tall.

Vaguely remember seeing this on eBay a little while ago, or one very similar.

Certainly an unusual piece. T'were me, I'd be keeping it as is and copying it in metal for a running engine.
Two things leap to the eye tho'
1. A valve/stop cock on the exhaust outlet 2. No sign of a steam inlet

Hi Tel, Yes the inlet is oddly placed, the outlet is the other side with no valve. A bit of an error in locating the inlet I would say. I found this one that looks similar, it looks like it is a picture in an archive of a site that sels models www.viewmodels.co.uk/complete/Half%20Beam/Half%20Beam%20Engine.htmlCopy the whole thing ... now there's an idea. I must admit to being a little uneasy about messing with it, which is one reason I was asking here if anyone could nail down the model, age or anything about it. That would certainly discourage any mods to it. I'll lift it off the base and see if it is signed underneath. I won't be doing anything right away as I have too many other things on the go. So plenty of time to see if anyone recognises the type. Steve

OK Tel, you have won me over.
Incidentally, in researching this I came across the Ridley's engine - excellent thing to be modelling.
