Has anyone built a 2" Clayton?
I have been told that they are a bit under geared and as a result do not travel well over grass. I know that there is a design to put in a lay shaft with an extra pair of chain gears but its ..... not authentic. So I have been toying with the idea of some type of gear reduction inside the crankcases.
Before I spend too much time knocking up a design, does anyone know if such a design exists? (I also intend on fitting a clutch, crank balance weights....)

I built one about 10 years ago and the weigh shaft was described in ME about then so I was able to incorporate it.
With direct drive a Clayton will do about 6 miles an hour - and I found that dead scary!
The Tyler instructions are excellent and I can send you photostats if you are interested- but I used facilites at the local Tech as there is a fair bit of milling.
The boiler did steam well but I never mastered driving the thing and hope my Grand children will show an interest!

Bernard Lundberg did a series of articles for a scale engine with a layshaft for operating the valves. My idea was rather to use it to reduce the gearing within the crank cases.
In either case did you build the scale engine? If so do you have a view as to it's performance when compared with the standard Dyer Design.
I was unaware of any other redesigns.

I went with the Dyer (sorry - not Tyler!) design and had finished it before BL's articles appeared. They looked wonderful if I remember correctly but I didn't feel able to do the ideas justice!
