I was wondering if any steam locomotive building instructional videos are available, if not then this must be a great gap in the market & would be an opportunity for an experienced loco builder & camera/ computer geek. If a series of such videos were to be made, I think that they would sell like 'hot cakes', but some old hands with hard won experience may think that this makes it too easy!. ( I once knew a man who would not use dial calipers because they were too easy to read!). I am fairly new to machining & would obviosly like to obtain the clearest of instuctions, for I have heard that many of these projects tend to come to a grinding halt. I am willing to have a go at anything except boiler making & foundry work.

That last sentence reminded me of the quote :- "To have lead a full life, one must experience everything - -except incest and morris dancing" You are right about the video. Better make it a DVD with various scenes. BTW. I noted that "a chap down our club" - no names - had a DVD from one of those magazines which sell IC Cars, Boat Kits, etc (you know the type that charge £1.99 for the first issue and £6.99 for the rest of the 60+ needed to build the car at twice the price of a fully built one from a model-shop.) Anyway, that DVD was a blow-by-blow of how to fit the parts together - including the IC (glow) engine bits - and was really well turned out. If they can do it, I'm sure there must be someone out there who's a ModEng and capable of making the DVD. Andy BTW. For a still picture version, covering a Sweet-pea, see www.carnoustie47.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm (aka Craigmill Engineering) Andy

Camden does some Rudy Kouhoupt DVD's at about £30 each
I noted in ME that Mick Appleyard is offering his work as a book with CD rom of the photo's, but don't know the price.
I suspect if anyone tried doing some home movies of their own efforts in a workshop that quiet a lot of the sound track may have to be censored due to technical engineering terms like b*****r.

Guys,
It occurs... I've got all/most of the kit necessary to do a DVD (and once did a Sony course on it) and have the casting et al for Reeves' Locomotion. The problem is that at my current rate of progress the DVD is going to be a distant memory for the very old.
A speedier approach would be a repository (similar to these threads) of video on making particular bits and not just limited to Loco bit manufacture. Maybe a simple photo montage of certain process would be a easier step.
However, either approach would still be a massive undertaking for anyone. Getting anything really useful out of it would require a lot of thought up front and even then could end up being of marginal use to the novice/first offender.
