One of my larger copper boilers needs replacing. I've contacted many of the reputable names. Of those that bothered to reply(!) I've had a range of quotes. The highest is almost exactly twice the lowest. If it were a matter of a tenner or even fifty quid I'd not be too concerned but a couple of grand...?
In all cases the delivery time quote is about 10 months so evidently the demand is there for the higher priced product.

You should worry, we had quotes for a steel boiler for our 1/3rd scale TAW ranging from 2.4K to 11 K ! The 11 K man said, when queried, that the cheaper ones must be rubbish but maybe he just didn't want the work. I reckon you have to go by personal reccomendation and going to talk to 'the man'. We had a copper boiler from Trevor at Swindon Boilers and although it took a bit longer it was right in the middle of the upheaval over the new PED being a cat 2 boiler. Looks a first class job and came with a Hyd. certificate. As for the steel boiler I've been to look at the "works" and was there when Lloyds were there doing weld integrity checks on a batch, so saw all the root work and so on. I'm not a coded welder so believe in letting the experts do what the experts are expert at. As for delivery, it will be one of a batch of three so we live in hopes. There are probably some garden shed boiler makers out there but when you walk into a unit and can see twenty or thirty boilers in various stages of construction it makes you think the guys must know the score. Its the same old story really, if you ring a builder to do a job and he can start tommorrow, in my mind, it rings the alarm bells.

I had a mate who had his own copper boiler making business. One of the biggest problems he had was customers had very realistic ideas about what they could afford. But lived in a fantasy world when it came to how much things actually cost.
His solution, well he went back to full time employment as an employee, much less hassle.

Can anyone give a ballpark figure for the cost of a boiler for a 5" guage loco, or for that matter the total cost of parts for a 5" loco. Just a very rough idea would be much appreciated, thanks.

It depends a bit on the boiler. A small parallel one is going to be cheaper than a big taper. Think in terms of 1 to 2 thousand pounds.
