Anyway, I'm out of here - my acerbism is always taken the wrong way by these "engineers". Cheers DJ That's a real shame. DJ has made some real contributions this time around: it's unfortunate that a few people don't share his (occasionally) controversial view on the world and react accordingly. Paradoxically, he berated me recently for being too sensitive! On a lighter note, who am I going to exchange banter with now?! JB

DJ just said it how he thought it, even when 'controversial' words were used, why are so many online so sensitive? I'm thin skinned but still, who actually cares? I'm sure I can guess at the word which 'someone' took offence to, even the bingo callers cant use '2 fat ladies' now incase it offends any of the 'big boned females' which sit down all night dabbing. My nephew cant sing bar bar you know what now as he'd be inciting black slavery, the poor sheep is now a rainbow for 'my appropriate religious ruler's' sake. Anyway back to topic, I'm just glad we all saw the track finished, it puts some club tracks to shame!

Who upset DrJ this time?
I have looked through the various topics on which DrJ has commented and can't find a reply to him which would offend.
I can only assume it is a private correspondence.
DrJ's outlook on life probably has little in common with mine but I have certainly appreciated his input to this group and learnt some from his work and experiences.
Regards Ian

Same here, it's been an interesting thread all the way through.
Despite his somewhat robust opening remarks, DJ was trying to open what could have been an interesting discussion in the (since removed) offending thread. It's a shame that a few politically correct souls took up the wrong end of the stick, so to speak, and turned that discussion aside. The site will be so much the poorer for his going.

I'm also sorry to see the good doctor go, he was more use to this forum than some of the people who were decrying him, however I suppose having a poke [no pun intended] at the holy cow of model engineering was a step too far. I suspect he'll do a Sinatra and have yet another comeback in the future Ron

Come back dj for gods sake, I will miss your comments and enjoyable threads. Perhaps we should have a voting thread on who would like to have dj back and who would not. Mike

I'm not sure who deleted the LBSC thread/ I was watching it closely, and although controversial, it didnt appear to be getting out of hand. I didnt notice any posting in it that I felt would have offended Dr J.
I can only assume that something there did, or perhaps someone sent him a PM.
In any case, he will either rejoin us, or he wont. The choice is his.
I always feel that it is a pity to lose any member, especially one who makes a contribution.

Erm, that would be me - at the request of the originator. The thread was going nowhere really, just became a p*****g contest to see who was the most politically correct or the most tolerant of po gays. I suspect that what upset 'im was the fact that people picked up on his, probably ill advised, preamble and were not apparently following up on the link to an interesting article. As it happened, DJ's link would not work for me, but I did manage to track the piece down - you can find it HERE if anyone wants to reignite the discussion, preferably, I think, in Let It Roll.

Thanks Andy, that link works. A good read, I'd read it before in EIM but the postscript is great to see, they got it right.

Didn't know where to post this, but I thought here might be OK. I'll try not to swear too much! Big disappointment today. Put the Simplex on the track and fired it up - 10 minutes with the electric blower then with 20PSI on the clock, switched to the steam one - another 10 minutes and the safeties were popping, so off we went with just one guy on my new passenger trolley - dr-john.org/movie/pt.wmv - sorry, the camera ran out of RAM!! Despite all the new rust on the rails, I couldn't get up the hill at the end with wheel slip.. But when I got it back to the start point, the water was a wee bit low, so I topped up with the injector. With the blower running and what looked like a good fire, even after 30 minutes I only had 20PSI on the clock. I can only assume the Chinese (hide your grand childrens eyes, stantheman) anthrashite was clogging the grate, but I just could no longer get any pressure. There were no steam leaks , so I have to make the assumption it's the rubbish fuel I'm using. Certainly when I eventually dropped the fire, there were a multitude of white bits of slate. I just wonder if my grate bars are too thick and consequently the spacing is insufficient. I have long since dispensed with the ashpan to reduce the risk of suffocation of the fire. However, hopefully in about 2 weeks I should receive some anthracite from the UK, so until then I won't be bothering to steam. DJ

John What coal were you using in the video of you and the missus on the truck, it seemed to be going fine then? Ron

At long last, I think I may have discovered the firing problem.
The charcoal is so light that on the blower, it gets up steam no problem, but once I'm underway with a load, the blast pulls holes in the fire and also draws lumps of semi-burnt charcoal into the bottom flues.
Once I get my proper anthracite, hopefully next week, I will be able to confirm this theory.
