Well I put the Gauge 1 stuff to sleep for the winter and decided to finish a few small projects and one special project for a retiring friend of mine. He has always been fascinated by these little engines so I am going to make one and present it to him before Christmas on his retirement day.
Made a start on a few easy parts this week and I am about to make the cylinder and piston, I have bought the bearings so they will be the only non made parts on this project.
Its actually quite a refreshing change doing something a little different.
Will post a few pics as the engine progresses.

Funny how we always try harder when doing something for someone else.

Progress so farPosting a few pics of the engine so far. The base plate and pillars The crankshaft, connecting rod and locking bolt. The finished fly wheel, not bad for my first attempt. The crank and fly wheel assembled Just waiting for the cast iron to come in so I can get on with the cylinder and pistons. The bearing supports are next tomorrow, these look like tricky fiddly little things so may take up a lot of set up time, can't wait... ;D ;D ;D

A little more work completedThe bearing supports now milled, drilled and bearing pressed in. On assembly everything fitted with no holes out of line or tightness of the crank when rotated. The valve rod and adjuster. Mounted on the base its beginning to look something like an engine, just waiting for my cast iron to show up and I will soon have it running. Started on the spirit burner today and decided to use a round version instead of the square one depicted in the plans. More pics later. ace

Cheers John,
It turned out better than I thought it would and I nearly didn't give it to Alf.

Hi Ace, looks really good and just the type of project to apeal to many. Have you worked from a published design and if so where? I presume it actually works and would be interested to hear of any startup problems as flame gulpers can be the very devil at times. I bet your mate is over the moon with that one.
All the best John

1st class job,I fancy making one myself,is the cylinder all solid cast iron or a liner as the polished finish looks like alloy?? thanks Graham.

Hi Graham
This one has a cast cylinder I just polished it to a high finish hoping it would look better than a grained finish. As John points out there are new modifications to this engine now. Its a great little runner, took a few attempts to get it to run smoothly at first but it does run well now. Its a nice little project with some rewarding results.

Although I have seen them before, I saw one of the best I have ever seen at Basingstoke model engineers open weekend, last Sunday. A pal, who had never seen one running, was entranced by it.
They are certainly an attraction and draw the viewers.
