Hi all
I am looking at a 3" traction engine for sale as a set of unmachined castings, but with a home made steel boiler.
The boiler has the material spec sheets and a southern federation boiler test sheet, valid for four years, tested to two times WP. will i have problems, or is this now classed as a certified boiler acceptable to all and sundry
Would like the club boiler inspectors opinions please as the setup is good value with a useable boiler otherwise its over priced
Regards Wayne

Once it has a VALID Southern Fed certificate, you should be OK. However, it rather depends on the Boiler Inspectors who are going to be inspecting it at your own club - are they happy with a steel boiler? I know a lot of folk seem rather funny about it. Do you have any information on the welding competence of the welder? Presumably whoever issued the SF Certificate must have been convinced about this.

you can test it but can you insure it? if you have the material certs that one thing but what about hte cometance of the builder as has already been mentioned.

Well to be fair... If the material certificates are valid then thats all you need. Regardless of whther it has a cert or not... If it has been constructed by a person who is not a coded welder then the Boiler will be subject to an initial hydraulic of 2.5 times working pressure then twice there after. If the boiler has been constructed by a coded welder then its twice working pressure for the initial test and 1.5 there after. As said if the material isnt certified its scrap metal. So aslong as you have these its should be fine. At the end of the day if the southern Fed aint happy big deal.. Use an inspector who deals with the full size and use someone like Cornhill insurance.. Southern Fed are a funny lot of folk.

I suspect this boiler falls foul of CE regulations. There is an exclusion for complete engines with a non professional boiler provided they have been steamed. Unless the boiler has a history of being steamed it is scrap.

Surely, if it's a "home made boiler" and not built for commerce, it isn't subject to the CE marking requirements.
A problem may possibly arise if it's only been "hydraulicaled" and never steamed. I know that some "boiler inspectors" are claiming that the steam test must be completed soon after the hydraulic even though tghis is not required in "the Blue Book".
