Probably a ridiculous proposition, but can anyone suggest a means of creating a knurled type finish without a knurling tool or lathe? (I know it's possible to create a similar effect by alternately filing at 90 degrees but I don't want to take off too much material)
It's for the top of my safety valve which is currently just a hex headed bolt - I want to make it 'finger adjustable' (and more attractive/finger-friendly than a hex head) but there's no room for a handle. Ideas gratefully received!

About the easiest (?) way would be a straight knurl, i.e., vertical "lines / grooves" which could be done with a 3 corner file, or fine hacksaw.

Paul, if it's brass file it round and 'roll' it on a flat surface with a rough file. Ron

Paul, Find a disposable cigi lighter ,take the wheel out , make a little tool holder fit the lighter wheel, making sure it runs easily without shake, and bingo you have a small knurling tool, only fine straight knurls , but what do you want for free?, and your doing your bit to help the recycling craze.

What a brilliant idea, I need some items knurled and I was going to do the 'roll over the piece with a bastard' method that I have used before. Now I will have to raid smokers corner for old lighters. I suppose you could set two wheels at a slight angle and get diamonds? Something for nothing, I love it ;D
Cheers
