I need some 110V bulbholders for a 4" showmans engine. It has been suggested to me that these are best purchased in the USA - does anyone have any experience of this and can advise where to try looking for them? I'm flying out to Florida on the 24th so any help or advice would be appreciated

Is it possible for you to post or email a photo of exactly the bulb holder you need? Old style porcelain bulb bases, such as Eagle (Electric) #610 or #304, are still readily available but no doubt each mfg makes a slightly different version and one might be more suitable than another. These can be had cheaply, have a look at eBay auction #7597571564, currently running. Leviton is another mfg. The dimesions would also help narrow the search . . . diameter of base flange and height to top of bulb socket. What about the bulb screw base, are they the same ? Teakfreak,
The British Railway industry use 110 volt lighting on many of the loco's we see running around. Nothing sexy about the lamp holders, standard bayonet or Edison screw. Made usually from brass, I've seen the odd porcelain type, depends who makes the fitting.
I would have thought the bulbs might be the hardest part to find easily as most domestic suppliers don't sell them to avoid confusion when some daft b**g*r puts one into a 240 volt light.
Is there something special about the showmans type?
Waggy.

110volt lighting is used on building sites and such like for safety reasons. An electrical holesaler should have 110 volt bulbs.
