For my next project I am thinking about a Y6 GER tram engine aka Toby on Thomas the tank engine!
Does any one know where to obtain a set of drawings from, I wish to model this in 7 1/4 gauge and build it on a batt / elec powered chassis. I have actually found a kit for this in 5 inch but not in 7 1/4, so guess I will have to scratch build a body. Any help much appreciated. cheers Trev

I don't know about scale drawings, but the NRM may well have something of use of the full size. I'll have a look at the lists of GER drawings they hold when I have a bit more time later and let you know if I find anything.

Trev Are you sure about the Y6 bit as I thought Toby was based on the later 0-6-0T Tram engines that became J70 in LNER days. Having had a look throught the Great Eastern Railway Societies index of NRM drawings I have found the following that may be of use to you although I'm only going by what the index says not having seen the drawings myself. Y6 Drawing ref. SX6369 0-4-0T Wisbech tram Engine General Arrangement dated 1883. J70 Drawing Ref. SX13529 0-6-0T Tram Engine General Arrangement dated 1903 Drawing ref. SX11647 Tramway Engines Class C53 Motion Arrangement dated 1920 Drawing Ref. SX11655 (2 sheets) Six Wheels coupled tram engines class C53 Rod, Pipe and clothing arrangement (Arrangement of tram engine without superstructure) dated 1903 The above drawings can be obtained from the Search Engine at the NRM, contact details available from their webiste www.nrm.org.uk/ResearchAndArchive/Visit.aspxHope this is of use. Richard,
Thanks very much indeed for that info, most grateful. You are quite right, Toby was based on the J70 as you say, it of course being an 060 as opposed to the Y6 which is an 040. Basically I have the drawings for an 040 chassis that will fit the bill, hence the reason for wanting the Y6 plans. I just used the toby analogy a bit generically - I know naughty!! :-).
Chers again and I will check them out. kind rgds Trev

As you are doing a Y6 then I would recommend Yeadons Register Volume 32 for a selection of photographs and for the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway in general I have just started reading the new book from The Oakwood Press by Peter Paye which seems pretty comprehensive but not specifically about the locos.

I have just started reading the book as well and have found it very interesting, quite a few accidents through the years! I started a Toby, re naming her Tina as I was at School with a Toby who had a sister called Tina, and its 4 letters etc, etc.
My first drawing was round a 20 ton toad but with the book coming out I have had to trim bits in between the wheels to make the outside to scale. Inside is very similar to the Y4 with a very slim set of wheels and motion. Ideal for a garden railway as the wheel base is very short.
Posting in this section I am also building a V4 I.C. engine for an 08 Diesel which may also have a face.
David.
