These 2003 pics surfaced whilst I was archiving some files over the holiday. I took them as a basis for a mag article that never got itself written. As things are a bit quiet at the moment perhaps the Forum will appreciate them. The boat was completed in six weeks, from a photograph, but I was on the wagon at the time........ My first steam engine and boiler, but nothing to put it into! Inspiration: Der Seekadett, a Swiss Lake launch kit, but mighty expensive at £1200+ motive power! No Option but to make your own. Plans were scaled up from a convenient photo. Ribs from thin ply, ship's lines guessed at! Held together with five minute epoxy Trying the engine for size and balance. Pine planks, made on the bandsaw. Ready for fairing. Hull covered with tissue and West system epoxy. Engine didn't reverse so it needed a variable pitch propellor. Here is the radio controlled actuator. the disc moves the shaft outwards which moves the spider on the propellor. Variprop. It was too small to handle the power so a larger one was made later. Cleaned up boiler with teak cladding, steam whistle, super heater dryer coils and oil separator. Laminated Tiller! Tank Testing at the Hamble Institute Finished article on the shores of Eastleigh Lake. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. JB

Superb. Nice to see you actually have a lake to sail your boat on. ;D They seem to be vanishing fairly rapidly due to greedy landlords, over zealous officials etc. Sold my paddle steamer and steam launch as local lakes taken away.

Nice boat JB Funny thing about the Swiss though - they never had an army (asking for a flamer!! ;D) but they flood the world with Swiss Army knives - where the hell did that nonsense come from? DJ

No army? They even have a "navy"! When I was looking at buying a Steyr Pingauer and the only affordable way was buying one from the annual army sale in Switserland. (at that time, already a few years ago I'm afraid)
Back to topic, Loco can you post a bit more on that adjustable screw?

Hijack!!! Mine's bigger than yours! ;D ;D Just put it on the water today - this one's for mackerel with 2 miles of net, the next one is for crabs and lobsters for Tel when he ventures up this way! 7HP Kama diesel engine with a fixed pitch 8" X 4" prop. DJ

Simplyloco,
looking at your first pic, this seems exactly what i want to have a go at adding a boiler to my first engine.
So how did you go about it please - like what design source, how much base experience in soldering/brazing etc.
Had some good advice earlier about clubs and boiler inspectors - just waiting for a 4th Sunday not committed to being a CO or a Dad, maybe this month.
Thanks

David That was my first go at live steam boilers, so I had no experience at all. It is a gas powered Martin Evans cross tube boiler design which I took from a ME magazine that I have since lost........ There were two sizes, this was the smaller of the two as I just happened to have a piece of copper tube that size to hand! It was quite straightforward, and a good base for moving onto the Brit........ JB
