You know how it is. You can't get that particular piece of work low enough in the vice to stop it sounding like a banshee as soon as you draw the file over it.
I was filing a cranked piece of steel which was giving be said problem so I clipped on a couple of those black plastic clips that you can buy in "pound shops" onto the steel.
It wasn't silent, but my teeth were at least content to stay put rather than wish to leave the room!
I know you can also use a piece of rag draped over, but I needed access to the top of the steel, so the clips went on from underneath.

I often clamp a strip of wood against it. Even if it sticks out a bit, it doesn't matter when filing.
