Hi, Can anyone please steer me towards some references for oil burner design and manufacture for 5 and 71/4 inch gauges.
A fellow club member has made one for an existing coal burner. It operates, but either pulses, consumes too much fuel, or appears to have air/fuel mixture problems. The firebox has an arch, and one concern is the very clean finish on the superheater tubes at the top of the firebox, and significant carbon deposit elsewhere.
We are trying to sort out the optimum combination of the various factors.
Happy machining, John.

Paul, Thanks for the link to Nelson Riedel's site. The burner he describes for his shay is the atomiser type. The burner we are developing is a vaporizing type, it has liquid fuel gravity fed to a burner tray. The tray has 90 jets in an area of 9" by 4" and is fitted into a 1.5" scale shay on 5" gauge. The latest review is looking at the benefit of installing a fuel cup in the line between the fuel control valve and the tray. We think the burner action creates a vacuum that sucks fuel though the valve. The atmosphere topped cup would prevent fuel sucking. One advantage of the cup is that it allows a measured amount of fuel to be introduced for lighting-up. I have found also that the following forum in the US has an long history of posts on oil burning. www.chaski.org/homemachinist/Happy machining, John.
