I am building a 5 inch king class loco. I do not like the look of cast dummy leaf springs. However i have tried to make my own from strip steel and found it difficult to join the leaves together. I am sure this is not a new problem, any suggestions. Is it feasible to make working leaf springs which look deep enough?

Dear Ivan, Welcome to the site, by cast springs I take it you are making the Spink King, a lovely model. For my spare time I am doing a Star from Peter Rich. Who has surfaced in the Model Engineer after many years away. Having an almost full set of drawings for a similarly weighted engine I could send you details of the leaf springs. My other 2 engines 5" Hunslets have working springs which are a pain but in such a prominant place just have to be done. They are held in place once you get them all lined up with a grub screw from underneath. usually a 4 ba. The main task is getting the square or rectangular hole just right, one evening each if your lucky. David Scott.
