Ok guys, time to pick your brains.
I've been thinking of buying a capstan, but they seem expensive and in the main too big (I wanted a C7 but cannot find one). So I thought lets buy a swanking pcf S7B and convert my mature S7B into a capstan with the come in handies that I have in her cabinet. So this afternoon I looked at a green pcf S7B for £££! But for an extra £200 I can have a 254S, which is almost a virgin.
Having got home I have realised that I only measured the base. Does anyone know the dimensions with the left hand door open and their depth. Can anyone help me? Please...
More importantly should I do it? I already have a Colchester master, a S7B and a Hobbymat. But at 3 hp the Master is often over kill, the S7B's has not Pcf and only a small bore and the hobbymat is for those lazy moments doing fiddly bits.....
I know the 254S metric but it is my age I can cope with that........

I went through the new lathe selection process some years ago and bought British because a suitable lathe was not available new in the US. My eventual choice was a Harrison M250 but the 254S was among those I considered and the dealer from whom I eventually bought a machine (R. A. Atkins Machine Tools, Guildford) nudged me toward the 254. In the years since then I have had the opportunity to talk with a few 254 owners and all shared the same feelings about the machine. It was nice enough, and handled the job, but for what they paid (new) one would have expected a lot more in the machine and none said that if in the market again they would buy the 254 again. There was nothing horrendous mind you, but numerous little things which disappointed. No doubt there just as many positive 254 experiences.

You could try and get a used model, Not second hand I have a speed 10 not quite the same class as a 254 but I got it cheaper as it had been used as a prop in a couple of TV shows. I can't remember how much cheaper it was I have had it a few years.
