Hi guys,
I've just finished reading the write-up on building the Vulcan beam engine designed by Edgar Westbury and rather like the sound of it. An old-fashioned beam engine (1830s?) and an old fashioned ME design (1950s?). I'm shan't be ready ready to start on it for a while, but I thought I'd have a ruminate and maybe start saving pennies for the castings. Has anyone built one of these?

The 'off the shelf' castings from Bruce are in gunmetal, but a friend of mine has just had a special order of iron castings and the cost is about half that of gunmetal. Took about 8 weeks to get them.
That should save you a bunch! Just need to ask Bruce for them.

Thanks Dave. I'll bear that in mind.

Is that Bruce as in Bruce Engineering as I didn't know they did the Vulcan. Thought Reeves and Brunell were the usual suppliers?

why not save more money and cut from the solid and fabricate. it can be done idid it years ago, and looked very nice too,and had a few very favourable comments at me exhibitions up and down the country. at the moment it is up in the loft, along with about a dozen more engines. i will try to get them down, with my sons help, as i cant get up there anymore. have a go JGB , its only metal and if you go begging borrowing etc it wont cost you much
