It's a wonderful bit of kit isn't it? And clearly well used. I can't imagine a finish like was that was obtained just by painting!

Absolutely great. I'd love to have a good look at it, see how it all works - so many bits to twiddle!

First glance I'd say it was a model of a 'Centre Engine'. These would commonly be used in fairground rides and it looks like this one could be used in a set of gallopers or the like. They sat in the middle of the ride and provided the power to turn it, sometimes directly or as an electrical generating set which would also provide power for lighting and the organ. The most famous manufacturer was Savage, I found these pictures to illustrate a full sized one: And an interesting link: www.nfa.dept.shef.ac.uk/history/miscellaneous_articles/article5.htmlAt least I thought so! Hope this helps chaps? Cheers Brian

Certainly looks similar Brian. I was suprised that the photos in the link were only taken in 1955 they seemed older (a little too close to my date of birth for comfort I guess!).

Those pictures of the steam yachts reminded me of a visit to Carters Steam Fair many years ago. The Steam Yachts were the scariest fairground ride I've ever been on bar none! Carters Steam Fair is still going strong and we visit it most years. They have steam gallopers as well as the steam yachts.

Hi Paul
Yes the device on the side of the boiler barrel is indeed a pump, ecccentric driven off the crankshaft. The other bit of 'gubbins' is an injector, looks to me like a Penberthy lifting injector. The slightly odd thing is that it is feeding into the boiler through what appears to be a shared clack valve on the pump body.
Cheers
Brian
