Sorting the Simplex. Remember this Simplex that I bought a month or so ago? I'm slowly sorting it, as it is a bit of a 'nail', but it does run well. We've had some fun with it at the Club, and all have been invited to 'have a go'. Those who have tried it have been pleased with its easy steaming now that I've sorted a few things out. That's a Simplex for you, despite its few design problems, a good steamer. The injector works a treat when it is cold water, or even warmish. But - when the water gets very warm, it's rate of injection is low and the overflow plentiful. Is there any way of encouraging an injector to perform more efficiently with warm water? I didn't want to have a separate tank as I do with my own Simplex. Chris

I had the same problem with the 94XX I 'rejuvinated' recently. The water in the side tanks gets very warm very quickly and the injector soon stops working.
It is possible to make injectors that will pump 'hot' water but I've yet to discover the secret - no one seems to want to explain how to do it. Apparently, Jim Ewins could make them but I can't find any mention of how he did it.
It can be done by making the injector cones adjustable (I think) but that is going to be fiddly in 'our' sizes. I would imagine that a fixed cone version that does work with hot water will probably not perform very well, if at all, with cold.

I was told that injectors that will pump 'hot' water are made by putting two injectors in series. Don't know more than that.

Running with Hot and Cold.
Thanks John and Peter. I didn't think there would be an easy answer to it, but I was hoping! I made some injectors years ago; a batch of 10. 2 didn't work. 2 were temperamental. 6 worked. So, when I get time away from running and sorting the 'Nail', maintaining my Simplex and building the V4, I'll have a play with the 'didn't work' ones, after all , I have nothing to lose. If I could get one to work on warm water but not cold, the answer would be to have 2 injectors. Cold one side, hot the other. Chris

I just chuck a handful of ice in the tanks when the water gets too hot. DJ

IIRC hot water injectors have a smaller diameter steam cone than a cold water injector of the same size. So they will very likely not work on cold water or if they do it will be with the water valve adjusted down somewhat.
