hi,as a new member ive been reading all the threads on the cylinder and slide valve problems.ive been asked to repair a 14xx cylinder set on an engine that has run for approx 9 years. It appears to be an early kit, although at some point the pistons have been made/fited with iron rings.these seized in the bores over winter. The bores are 1.266 dia plus an ovality area in the bottom side .Im comsidering boring out and fitting stainless liners, new pistons with reeves 1.25 iron rings.as anyone any experience of stainless liners and iron rings? im also going to fit drain down valves has anyone else done this?while i have my lathe set up to machine pistons, liners etc is anyone in need or has anyone else fitted liners and what material did you use?.im also going to re-design the fire box door, has anyone done this yet and how did you do it? lots of questions ,many thanks

stainless liners? Forget it, stainless won't hold an edge on a knife, because its too soft, and has less than 45% iron in it.That's why holds a magnet with contept, as LBSC used to say.Your iron rings would ruin the liners in short order.

I'd go for cast iron liners with cast iron pistons. I haven't tried Reeves rings so can't comment. Make sure you get some oil in the cylinders when the engine gets laid up over the winter. I have holes in the front covers with a screwed plug. I squirt oil in before the winter lay up.

It depends on how much ovality there is in the bore.If there isn't much, perhaps just honing them out to remove the ovality may be enough. If not maybe ptfe rings may be the way to go,(Baggo has loads of experience of these and no doubt would be happy to tell you how to go about it) or maybe clupet rings will do what you want, without going to all the trouble of machining new cylinder castings.

well ive gone and done it,im machining new cylinders from steel,i like the idea of lube holes front aand rear, and im fitting drain cocks as well.if anyones interwested ill cnc them and if you want to order now let me know sooner rather than later.dont know costs yey..Out of interest the liner solution didnt work as the cover holes front and rear werent concentric to the bore and the cylinder blocks were so oval there was not enough meat where i needed it ho hum,ill posy pics of new cylides when finished nev
