Hi guys, I am having difficulty in making the joint between the barrel of my boiler and the inner dome steam tight. Its quite a narrow flange which makes it difficult to make a new gasket from card which doesn't break around the studs. What fexible gasket material could I use instead? I tried one by a company named Kent called "sili -gasket" but at about 50lb pressure it blew. Hylomar - blue wasn't strong enough. Green Hermitite has been mentioned. I also have some loctite flange sealer but am doubtful that it will stand up to the high temperature. I have beefed up the bolts clamping the flange already and the joint will be metal to metal if I go down this route. A friend has suggested instead making up a copper gasket, well annealled which would do the job but if there is a flexible sealer out of a tube it would be much easier! Mott

I was reading the Britannia Builders Diary the other day and it mentions a sealant called Foliac Graphited P.J.C made by Rocol which Modelworks use for sealing the cylinder backplates. Looking up the specs it appears it will withstand temps of 450 degrees C and pressures of up to 1400PSI ! It might be worth giving that a try. It needs to be left for 24hrs at least though before using. Loctite also do some liquid sealants for pipe flanges etc. that may be suitable. I have seen Hermetite gasket sealants recommended as well.

Hi Guys, Debbie says use the gasket, she is supplying a spare, with blue Hylomar. I have several pots of Foliac supplied with my 14XX kit but have not used them because I was advised by other builders that foliac dries out over time. I wonder if this is the same spec as the foliac PJC made by Rocol mentioned in the Britannia Builders site? Mott

We always used to make our own version of Foliac at the railway where I worked. Consisted of mixing graphite powder with cylinder oil until you got a nice thick paste. Worked a treat!
