Those using the Perrier drawings will see the note for an 1/8" packing to the backs of the castings for the expansion link bearing brackets to bring them into alingment with the valve spindles. Unfortunately another error exists at least in my castings, in that the bearings for the actuating worm on the left hand casting are not mid way between the bearing brackets as they appear in the drawings, something I didn't realise until I started to assemble the components Some slitting saw work and soldering has brought all back into alignment and hopefully not too visibly obvious. I don't know if others have encountered this problem or whether my castings are an odd set but thought I'd mention it in case someone else has the same problem and can correct it in time. Jim

Jim,
Looking at the date on your posting this is far too late for you as a response, but may help others. Yes you are right, the casting with the worm gear is out of alignment. After much thought I cut the end of the casting off which holds the bearing for the worm fastened it about 1/8th further out by a combination of soldering the bearing end and putting a plate at the bottom end if that makes sense. Tricky but it all works fine now - can explain in more detail if anyone is interested, however, the best plan is probably to use a Doug Hewson fabrication which is much more like the real thing.

Sorry Richard, I haven't checked this section for a while and It doesn't show up on the 'Participated' box at the top either hence my slow response. In short you are quite right in modifying the casting for the expansion link brackets and I did something similar by turning the outer bearing round to make it flush with the outer edge of the bracket as shown in the photo. I bought Hewson's worm drive but I can't recall if he had the casting at the time. Sharing information as you have will be a great help for anyone else building what really is an impressive locomotive. Jim

I don’t know whether Jim looks at this thread which is not a general Britannia thread but was specific to Modelworks Britannia if you don’t get a response here I suggest you post in the General board. George Ray
