Does anyone know of a company that can roll tapered boiler barrels. I am building a 71/4" guage loco, and wish to have a steel boiler. the problem seems to be the small size, local firms can roll, but not as small as 8". Any suggestions would be welcome. Tom

G'day Tom
I don't know if this will work, but it did for me with copper of much smaller diameter.
I took a copper pipe of about the maximum diameter required and cut a wegde along it. I then anealled it and pulled the sides in with jubilee clips (screwed hose clamps). I silver soldered the but joint which was OK for this application.
It would work on a larger scale with a length of 8" diameter pipe cut down.
Just a thought. (From the armchair DrJ!)

Presumably the barrel will be at least 1/4" thick, and theres no way a Jubilee clip is going to pull that in, let alone the manipulation back to round at the small diameter end. Regards Richard

Thanks for the comments. the problem is that the barrel is specified as 3/16" and, as you rightly say, I would not be able to form that. There are tapered steel boilers around, but so far I have been unable to find out where the rolling was done. The few firms that I have tried can do the taper rolling ok but their rollers are too big a diameter to manage an 8" barrel!! Tom

Have you read any of Kozo's books on building the climax.heisler and shay.all of these have tapered, wagon top boilers. He just fakes them, with supports for the lagging.I'm talking about the larger steel boilers in the back of the book, not the usual 3/4" scale copper ones.his books are good, high priced but worth every penny.

The Shay in his first book is not a tapered barrel. The taper to the top crown of the boiler is done with an inset piece (on the steel boiler) See images My 7 1/4" Shay If you want to taper over a long length without rolling then you would have to split the barrel on the centre line and take out the amout you want on both parts then weld them back together. ( they won't be truly round ) A lot of work plus two extra seams to get right Paul

G'daY Richard.
I did envision something a bit heavier that a hose clamp ;D. More the concept not the method.
Paul made the same suggestion as me in his post.
