The fact that John just has a cosmetic restoring mechanism bears out my feeling that the lifting arm mechanism is more than adequate without the need of the help of, as in my case a very light spring. I'd go with the cosmetic option in view of John's observations.

I thought it was high time to have an update here! I have been plodding along on all sorts of bit including lagging the pipe work on the boiler top 5mm wide strips of bed sheet And cutting checker plate and 1mm ply for the cab Attachments:

I managed to get some 1mm ply from a model shop locally that sell radio control cars boats and aeroplanes. The checker plate I picked up from Blackgates some time ago Attachments:

Well there is the problem. They were with the loco when I got her. However the price labels were still on showing £85 each !
After some detective work they are the Dave Nobel ones I think.
