Welcome back JB-looking forward to seeing more of your excellent Brit pics.
Wish I could say the same about Dr John.I had hoped he might have read some of the comments aimed in his direction earlier in this thread and reflected upon those comments.

The large piece of metal on top is the 1/8" thick lump I'm supposed to use for the regulator handle bracket. This, I feel, is hideous, and I propose to use the bent up 16g stainless bracket that you can see stuck to the backhead. I can close the poppet valves with my human breath, so I'm assuming that I won't need to swing the handle hard on a thickish cast bracket! Please let me know, politely if possible, if I am under a misapprehension. It is very strong, and will be secured with rivnuts, but I can put a small web in it if necessary... Thanks JB

The new one should be more then adequate, it will be a lot stronger than the rest of the linkage any way. PS good to see you back, did try your email but that was shut down too. Mike

Mate you are doing a good job, if youve got to pull and yank levers and handles it made ot tight , your new brk is ample and looks 100% better , i knew a guy who made scake backheads in 3.5 gauge looked like it would all break if touched but he would drive it by light finger preasure , always used to say ( and he was an old man) when my eyes start to go ill build 5 inch gauge. keep the pics comming. Sorry folks, but all I have to show for a couple of hours in the hutch this afternoon is this SS bracket for the injector valve which is going in the proper place outside the cab. I might make and add the upper dummy valve for the other injector if there is enough room. JB

Regulator Handle Forgive me folks for the piecemeal pics, but if I waited until I'd finished the backhead, nobody would see any pictures until I'd bu**ered off to France for the summer! In addition, I can't fix the cladding on until all the rivnuts are in place on the backhead. This Swine Scale Flu is a dreadful affliction for people like me. Take this handle: if I made it out of the specified 3/32" steel plate , then the original handle would have been one and a half inches thick! The boss at the top is another example: I could almost use it as a towing eye on my car! I couldn't hold with that, so here is a stainless steel one half the thickness and hopefully, a little more elegant. The 2.5mm tapped boss has a spigot 5mm diameter upon which the handle revolves around easily, secured by the SS button head screw. As Noggin suggests, I should be able to drive it around the glass case using fingertip pressure only.....

The build is supeb JB and you'll have no trouble at all driving it out on the 3.5" mainline with the same fingertip control.

Time to fit the wrapper on the firebox as I have to do some precise positioning of bits. Here are the home made rivnuts being soldered in. I started at the top: drill 10BA clearance hole in wrapper; remove wrapper and backhead plate; drill 2.5mm for rivnut; solder in rivnut; put in screw/bolt; reassemble; do next each side and so on until you've gone round. Tedious, but it seems to have worked OK. I'm not sure whether I'll have Csk screws or reduced head bolts: both are in at the moment. They will be inside the cab anyway so will be disguised! JB

The backhead plate is fixed to the wrapper (but removable), and I now have to get the front part (that will be seen) as good a fit as I can get. Front plate clamped up and the wrapper marked off parallel with the front face of the plate. Front edge trimmed to the line 1/8" back from the throatplate face. I now have a fit as good as I'm going to get. I just have to screw it up tomorrow! JB

G'Day JB, Fantastic work, please keep the photos coming, I find them easier than words. I guess you will cover it but, how do you propose to attach, and to what, the firebox cleading? Will you scew through into the foundation ring.. Cheers, Arch. PS It is going to be 30 C + here today.

As you suggest, I'll put a couple of locating screws through the base of the backhead plate: the front part is held on with a boiler band. The manifold holds down the crown part, and the holes for the valves are a close fit on the bushes, so it isn't going to move very much! Getting really quite exciting! JB

Completed firebox wrapper.I've used csk screws at the back, and reduced head 10BA screws at the front. It was very important to get a tight joint between the top and bottom front plates. It's a bit tight on the boiler, as the rivnut interiors encroach, but I'll file them off to suit. I might fair the front edges of the SS with Milliput. I've assembled it off the boiler as I can build most of the cab on it without having to lug a heavy boiler about.....I think! Wish me luck! JB
