For the same project I wanted to weld the bogies, I hit another snag...so I humbly place the following before your exhalted highnesses:
The loc will be a gauge 1 Bo-Bo type, with the cabin at one end, and the hood stretching from there to the front in a single stretch. For reason of the prototype having various openings at the front of the hood, I can best place the boiler at the front.
So the placement of the parts will be something like (from front to back) boiler, engine, pump, generator, cabin (with controls). I'll try to add a drawing one of these days.
So the problem is that I will put the boiler under a hood and it will be invisible. No problem so far, but it will also be about 15-20cm away from the cab. Is it possible to place a water gauge that far away from the boiler or is this asking for trouble?
I have a feeling that the pressure gauge can be put that far away, but if some of you have reason to say that is a bad idea, please do so.

Havoc,
It occurs to me that you're going to need the final nod from your favourite boiler tester no matter how good your solution.
Just for the exercise... I would have thought the water pressure difference between the top and bottom of the water of gauge 1 boiler may struggle to give to an accurate reading over the meniscus drag you'll get along the tubes unless they are over sized. Also, pitch changes could worst case give you an over optimistic idea of how much water is left in the boiler.
