I'm thinking of adding brakes to my Simplex but there is no mention of them on my plans.
Has anyone done this? If so would you be willing to share any drawings you might have of the placement and so on of how to do it?

Hi Ron - I think the other Ron put brakes but only on 4 of the wheels.

Have a look at freespace.virgin.net/simplex.steam/simplexprobs.htm#1.Brakes. for some ideas based on Super Simplex. I'll have a look at my paperwork and see if I kept any notes on how I did it. The only real problem I had was the very limited space between the cylinders and the front wheels. Brakes can be sqeezed in, but I think the rear cylinder cover has to be relieved a little. I have heard of some people only braking the driven and rear wheels. As the brakes are really only effective for parking that would be OK I guess. This is one of those things that makes this hobby so interesting - you really have to make it up as you go along! David

Thanks for the replies.
I'll continue to kick this idea around a bit.

As I suspected I based mine on the Super Simplex design, which russell has talked about. I made a few notes and a drawing which might be useful. Front and driven hanger pivots bolt to frame. No 4BA clear holes 2½" in front of axle centres and 15/16" above axle centre. Hanger pivot for rear axle needs to be threaded 4BA as firebox prevents use of a nut. Check pull rod lengths for Simplex wheel spacings. Pull rods have right hand thread at one end, left hand thread at other. Brake blocks, iron casting (probably from GLR). If you look at s897.photobucket.com/albums/ac175/drm_public/Simplex/ you'll find a drawing of my cross shaft bracket and a photo (that makes me ashamed of how dirty the loco is. I feel a repaint coming on, when it's warmer!) David

Thanks David. This along with what Russel has kindly provided looks like what I needed. Many thanks to you both.
