In a recent Model Engineer, a model Foden steam wagon was featured (mainly because it had been stolen while the owner was on holiday and he recovered it from a car boot sale by buying it back) but it was also noted that the steel boiler was all rivetted construction which got around the coded welder issue. Now it didn't say what scale it was, but it looked like 4" or 6" Do the various codes for model boilers permit the use of all rivetted model boilers, and would there be any problems getting one insured?

Plenty of full size engines running with rivited boilers so can't see a problem with insurance but you would have to go to an independant inspector as I don't think a club one would want to test it. Having said that quite a few new full size boilers are being done with welded joints.
Also if the boiler is over 500bar/lts then its outside the model code anyway.
You would also have to provide the design calcs for the construction/joints.

I have no intention of doing this myself, but am just curious if its still a possibility within modern model boiler construction requirements. I know that technically it works, because I have a Stuart catalogue from the 1930s showing a large range of model sized rivetted steel boilers.
