I notice there is an advert for Turbo Cad on page 3 of the current Model Engineer.

There is a drawing of a locomotive which illustrates why the thing you are looking at is often called a "Confuser", look at the er coupling rod......

Maybe he did use a jig,

but designed it on the same confuser....?
