Hi I am new here so please bear with me
I am overhauling my Myford Super 7 and wondered if anyone new the code number for the Myford Grey Paint
As I want to re-paint the cabinet and drip tray I would like to buy larger than the 250ml cans Myford offer.
Thanks
AJ

If you can get a small piece off and take it to your nearest Dulux trade paint stockist they will be able to get a match from that. Possible automotive paint suppliers can do the same thing. Failing that try Myfords themselves they are usually very helpful.

AJ,
You'll need to be sitting down before you get the price of this paint from Myford. I bought a tin a while back and still have it.
I eventually went for a spare tin of Hammerite I had on the shelf (Black). It sets off the grey of the old 7B quite well.
The other week I was at the North Nibbly Steam show and got chatting to a guy with a very nicely hand painted (Green) stationary engine. He used paint from Tekalloy (not sure of spelling) and the finish was very good. He said they were from Wolverhampton way and very helpful. I inherited some with the house 20 years ago, it was old then, and apart from taking an age to go off gave a great brush stroke free finish.

Hi,
The firm to talk to if you want industrial type paint is Trimite Ltd. They will do a colour match from a chip.
The paint which Steve W mentions is almost certainly Tekaloid. This is great stuff and (at least one type) is designed especially for brushing. It stays liquid for long enough to brush in several different directions.
Chris.

Another suggestion is Technical Paint Services. They supply, among many other paints, brushing enamel and are used to model engineers and similar "odd" people (I have dealt with them many times!) contacting them.
They may well have Myford match paint in stock, but one of their standard greys looks the same to me.
They are now in Bournemouth, and have a website.

There are a few places in Birmingham that will mix paint and put it in a aerosol which has a fan jet that sprays like a proper gun.

Thank you
Thank you for the advice, I will try both Technical Paint Supplies and Trimite.
The price of a 250ml can from Myford was a good excuse to open the bottle of Scotch (Purely medicinal purposes)

Hi AJ,
Coming from Scotland I think that any excuse to open the scotch is a good one. The only thing is I think that a lot of Myford spares are incredibly reasonable, but maybe not their paint.
A mate of mine has a Boxford lathe and he really cries if he needs any parts of accessories. The other thing which is great about Myford is that they still supply the parts for a lathe you bought 40 years ago. I don't think the far east suppliers will be doing that in 4 years, let alone 40!!
Cheers Chris.

Most likely not, but a new lathe won't be much more than a few spares.

I don't think so.

AJ,
I go with the guys: Myford changed suppliers of grey paint during the production run so not only do you have the problem of fading paint but there are two colours of grey to start with!

I have ordered a new backplate so will use that to get a colour match.
I once painted my Drill Stand using International Grey floor paint and 5 years later it is as good as new. I wish that was the right colour grey.

Why is there this fixation with painting the lathe the correct colour? I can understand a model being correct colour, as is the nature of the thing, ie, a model. What difference would it make to Myfords excellent product should it be painted "sky blue pink" ? Waggy.

Good point, well made. Reckon if I was buying it I would be happy if it was some sort of grey - just pleased it had been looked after. Not many of us have done a degree with special subject Myford lathes at the University of Myford, so we would be unlikely to notice or probably care - more interested in the bed and headstock wear. Recommend International Grey Floor paint then, especially as you may have it in stock. Incidentally, there was a pink one on eBay not so long ago - probably yours then Waggy. ;D Regards, Tony

Just trying to get it all looking right, just like your Loco's but yes condition of the bed and headstock are what determine, how accurate it is, not the colour of the paint.
