I have a 31/2" Brittannia (LBSC) that needs a small amount of finishing off. The biggest problem area is the cylinder drain cocks -the horizontal operating rod between the frames was originally installed directly above the hole where the front pony truck is attached. The operating rod has been moved, but it still is in the way of the fixing bolt. To save stripping it down, does anyone know of automatic or steam operated drain cocks suitable for 31/2"?? Thanks.

Hi Trainman,
there is an article in Model Engineer Volume 154, issue 3751 descibing steam operated drain cocks fitted to a 3-1/2" gauge Fairlie. They look quite neat and use a small piston to lift a 1/8" dia. ball off its seat.
There is also a design for automatic drain cocks which Steve Eaton has fitted to his 2-1/2" gauge narrow gauge loco 'Toby' which seem to work very well. These work by a 1/8" ball seating against a hole at the end of a horizontal housing. Any water in the housing causes turbulence and prevents the ball from seating allowing the water to escape. Once the water has been expelled the steam pressure holds the ball against the hole. I can email you a scan of the article relating to the design if it is of interest to you.

Hi In AME ( Australian Model engineer) there was a similar design but smaller using 3/32" ball . I have used it and it works fine on it's own and one have no control over it .If you need the info I can email it or posted on this thread . regards Shawki

Reversed grease nipples work OK as well. Turn the threaded end plain, turn the 'nipple' end straight & cut a thread on it & away you go
