Is it possible to change the direction of rotation of a piston valved stationary engine by feeding the steam to the normal exhaust connection?

Hi John,
It will run after a fashion but not very efficiently. Any lap provided by the piston valve will be on the wrong side of the ports and the valve timing will all be to cock, basically the valve will open to steam far too late in the cycle and open to exhaust too early (I think!). The only way to do it efficiently is to provide a proper reversing valve gear. If you didn't mind starting it by hand in the direction you wanted it to run, you could fit a simple slip eccentric valve gear.

I rather thought that there might be a timing problem. It occurred to me that the timing might be at 'top dead center' so to speak and then it probably would not matter which way the engine turned but I now realise that it would not as efficient in this balanced fashion.
Thanks for your explanation John, I just wondered if I might be able to use a simpler approach but I guess it would have been done before if it was viable.
