Good grief. It actually worked.
Will post some more of the garden and some of the workshop stuff in due course.

Here is the same part from the reverse angle. When the photo was taken I was starting the turf laying about 3 weeks ago. The track is 5" gauge with 10' radius curves. There is about 220 feet of track in all with a loop at each end. The track ran well initially but we started getting a lot of derailing where the slope runs down a curve into the point. I think it may need re-levelling as the ballast looks like it has settled. At the moment we are using a little battery loco but hopefully, one day, we will be running the Scamp, which at the moment is just frames, horns and axleboxes. Attachments:

I found this photo of the construction of the track - seems a long time ago now! Pete. Attachments:

Pete - looks very nice - I am jealous One day I hope to have something similar in my garden - but some time off I fear. Quick question - I note the radius for the curves is around 10 feet - isn't this rather small for 5" gauge? I got the impression from other threads etc. that suggested radius varies from around 20 feet to (ideally) 30 feet? Could well be I am misunderstanding the whole thing though ;D All the best, Alasdair

Hi Alasdair,
The locos are 0-4-0 and with short wheelbase so 10' radius is fine.
The ideal layout would have been around the house, but when I built it 23 years ago I never envisaaged adding a railway and the inevitable slopes in South Wales won't allow it now. No running of Manors I'm afraid.
Pete.

You can look at prices on the Maxitrak and Ride on Railways websites. These firms (and others) sell aluminium/plastic track in kit form which is suitable for the garden.
For club running, with heavy locos and lots of passengers, steel is the usual material for the rails. Clubs also have more space than most gardens so the curves are of greater radius and larger locos can run.
