The Cheltenham club is fortunate in having a small boating pool on site.
Every year it is used by 10-11-year-olds from a local school undertaking a project on what makes a boat float. The children are required to design and make a boat, the materials for this being provided by the school and include wood, cloth, electric motor with propeller and battery, glue and sticky tape etc. One very well made boat featured a propeller directed at its sail, needless to say, no movement was produced. Others were top heavy and turned turtle. One was powered by compressed air from a balloon, it moved, but only in small circles.
Few could doubt that this was both fun experience and a learning experience. I am sure that each child learned from there own success or failure and the successes and failures of others. Added value for the club is that it lets local families know that the club exists and what facilities it has.

A postscript ... In answer to an e-mail I have received, I should point out that the only involvement by the club is to make the site and its facilities available. Everything else is totally in the hands of the school.
