Julian, that chimney cap is a beautiful thing! Nicely done! I couldn't agree more Ben. It is indeed a lovely cap to crown an elegant chimney, locomotives of that period were works of art as well as being functional. Jim

Looks great Julian, I machined the cap for my sweet William from solid copper too, I used a very fine emery paper with Brasso then a final polish with a soft cotton cloth and Brasso all in the lathe of course, really comes up beautiful. Can just be seen in this picture Cheers Sean

I do like that....I love seeing a bit of bling on a locomotive, so much so that perhaps one day I may build something suitable from the nineteenth century...not sure on region though...something a little simpler than my current project..it would have to be, I won't live forever... great work Julian Pete Liverpool and Manchester....Lion!!

many thanks guys for your very kind comments.
in due course the local scrapman will be pleased to receive the huge pile of copper swarf not shown in the above pic.
i have probably spent more time pouring over pictures and drawings of Stroudley chimneys than the time taken to make the cap! i then think it helps if you can draw the thing as you then appreciate the nuances of the subtle curves and proportions. i havent got it quite to my liking yet.
incidentally the commercial casting for the chimney sold by Reeves etc is a gunmetal casting so completely the wrong colour for the copper cap.
cheers, julian

hi ben, that's very kind of you! it's as close as i can get to the original copper cap as now fitted to Fenchurch, though poor old Stepney has a rather indifferent cap fitted at Eastleigh in 1960 which isnt anything like the original shape. so ive made mine as per the original shape rather than as currently fitted to Stepney for the past 54 years! cheers, julian

Ah! That's where you are wrong Julian, Stepney had a new chimney some time before it went black as the other one became... very similar to a colander and with some interesting cracks up it! You are thinking of the strange parallel one it had, that has been replaced now Before After Cheers Ben

hi ben, although Stepney's 1960 parallel barrel and base was replaced a few years ago by the very accurate chimney it now has, the indifferently shaped 1960 Eastleigh copper cap was retained, and is quite different in shape to the F.C. Hambleton owned original cap that Fenchurch now has! (originally off terrier 47 Cheapside withdrawn in 1951). apologies, this is all a bit geeky to non LBSCR fans! cheers, julian

here's Fenchurch's current chimney a 'recent' replacement plus original terrier copper cap fitted. note how the copper cap has a generous curve underneath the widest part of the cap unlike that still fitted to Stepney in Ben's pics since 1960. i understand it was condition of sale in 1960 to the Bluebell that Stepney had a replacement copper cap chimney fitted and Eastleigh 'bodged' the job! they made a much better job when restoring terrier Waddon for export to Canada a few years later and made a much better replica original chimney. incidentally the NRM have the 1947 drawings for when a new Stroudley chimney was made at Brighton for Boxhill when preserved. cheers, julian

Looks great Julian, that copper really does polish up well, there is something quite satisfying about skinny parts!

a bit more progress - ive finished the chimney base as per the following 2 pics. there is a specially turned double taper sleeved portion that connects the barrel of the chimney to the base hidden of course in the pics, the sleeve being turned with a divergent OD taper to match the barrel (the barrel has a taper on it not easily seen in the pics), and a convergent taper to match the ID of the petticoat pipe and fill up part of the barrel internally. i always like to get the bases to domes and safety valve covers and chimney bases quite thin on the edges, plus a decent fit to what they sit upon. my digi camera battery was dead when tried this eve so the above pics were taken on my mobile. cheers, julian

Keeping those edges thin really does make it look more realistic, I'll pay attention to that and check the pictures of 1501 when I get to that point. That's a lovely job Julian.
