G'Day Everyone, I am casting around for the next model to build and Super Simplex looks attractive. What I am trying to figure out is" can I build one in a year?". I am retiring again at the end of this month and hopefully will make it stick this time so will have more time to work on important things. So, what is the consensus? Is it feasible to build a Super Simplex in one year? Any guidance/assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Arch

Building time is so variable that it is close-to-impossible to say how long one person will take to finish a specific model.
Some locos take 20+ years to build, others much quicker.
As a very rough average, I would suggest that most locos take around 2,000 hours to build, inculuding painting etc. More complex examples, or those with a lot of detailing, much longer.
An experienced builder, with reasonable equipment, and who works quickly, might finish the most simple models in around 1,000 hours, but I suspect that few are completed in less time than that.
For Simplex, perhaps 1500 to 2000 hours would be reasonable.

Thanks Alan, I know my question was bit like "how long is a piece of string" and that definitive answers are not possible. I was really just after a rule of thumb which is exactly what you have provided, thank you. There are indeed a lot of variable such as how fast the grass grows between cuts, how much the house needs painting etc. all of which compete for time enjoying other persuits. Thanks again, Regards, Arch

arch , horses for courses , as Alan says it is a wild card ;D . I can tell you about me , I started the hobby in 1980 , to date I have built 26 engines , one traction engine one lorry and 24 locos sizes from 2.5" gauge to 7.25" G . The variables are how quick you can get the supplies , how detailed the engine will be, what equipment do you have , how is your knowledge about what you are building , how deep is your pocket and so on . I think time is not important , the quality of time spent on making the model and enjoying the results is the major objective . It is not a race . If you like it build it .

Rob Roy was designed to be built in a year for a competition at the ME exhibition and there were I believe several entries. A friend did indeed build one in a year though he didn't paint it.
Although bigger, a simplex is a similar engine so it should be possible to build one in a year if you can spend enough time in the workshop.
That said, my Rob Roy took 27 years so I wouldn't attempt it. ;D
As said, it isn't a race so aim to build it as quickly as you can while still enjoying it without turning it into a chore!
