What proportion of the cost of having a 2 1/2" copper boiler made is likely to be the labour part? Then there is the cost of testing.
I'm trying to decide if it is right to make one or have it made for me.

At a rough guess John, 65 to 75% of the cost will be labour. Well worth making your own if you can. The material costs for a 2½" boiler are not that high, even with the cost of copper and silver solder nowadays.

Thanks John, I've been looking around and it seems that £800 to just over £1000 is the get it made cost. Pricing up the copper and not counting things like bushes I should expect to pay around £160 plus the silver solder. I guess I should go ahead and do it myself as what I save can go towards a better brazing hearth and a few other things. It looks like I'll be spending at the Bristol Exhibition.

£800 > £1K for a boiler that tiny, OUCH! a steel boiler for a 4" scale 10hp Mclaren road loco is only £2.5K and that is ginormous by comparison and rated for a WP of 200Psi..

Yes, it doesn't seem right does it, boiler prices are not scaled like the models themselves.

Today I received the copper to build my boiler, (approx £150) from M-Machine Metals. All the sizes needed were available and quick service. There might be a few questions to follow!
