Hello all
Having just finished my first ME project a 2" Durham & North Yorks Traction Engine, i am starting to think about my next one.
I would like to build a 7.25" guage LMS 0-6-0 3F "Jinty" but i have only ever seen drawings and castings for 5" guage.
Does anyone know if there is a supplier for this guage or if not is it ok to just scale up the drawings? Also if one were to scale up the boiler would it need to be approved or even altered?
Many thanks Jim

Hi Jim,
If you can't find a supplier for a 7-1/4" Jinty it shouldn't be too difficult to scale up Martin Evans 5" version from ME. The only thing to remember is that all the gauges have certain standard dimensions relating to that specific gauge which do not scale up or down exactly. These are dimensions such as width of the frames, wheel tread width and profile etc. You will probably have to check the enlarged boiler design with your boiler inspector as, strictly speaking, it will not be a published design. Obviously the plate thicknesses will have to be increased to suit and also the tube sizes, number and layout will probably have to be altered as well. A good idea would be to look at the boiler designs for similar 7-1/4" locos.
The main problem will probably be finding suitable wheel castings. It should be possible to adapt cylinder castings etc from other designs but it wouldn't be too much trouble to fabricate a set of inside cylinder castings especially if you stick to slide valves.

Hi there, I'm trying to build a Jinty from the Martin Evans drawings. Although he claims it is a scale model, there are quite a lot of details that are inaccurate, so my suggestion would be that if you are scaling up, then also take the trouble to go & have a look at (or even take a tape measure to) one of the preserved 3F's. Best of luck

Chris Finken lists drawings and castings for a 7.25 inch gauge jinty on his website miniaturerailway.com. The same source though as the Austerity mentioned on here that seems to be no longer available , but may be worth a ring anyway.
