Any one out there still hoping to finish their 57xx project I am looking for a boiler for mine. I have a boiler for a 14xx, M/W`s supplied incorrectly, either swap or sell. Have been very disheartened by the whole affair, was hoping to build and enjoy a 5" steamer by now but still haven`t finished the chassis due to every kit received has required fitting or re machining of some sort or another. One example being that the piston on full stroke protruded the cylinder by 2.5mm sorted by shortening the connecting rods to suit. Comments, advice and encouragement greatfully received. Regards Richard

Hi Richard There's a description of a Modelworks 57xx build at www.whiteice.co.uk . I expect that Tim would be able to offer advice and encouragement if you get in touch with him. Regards, John

I know that there are many common parts to the full size 1400 and Pannier tanks(5700 I believe),does the boiler fit or is there too much discrepency to use?

Yes Tim`s link at white ice seems to have gone to ground but did speak to him about a year ago and he made some recomendations ref the blast pipe and some other mods. The 14xx boiler steam dome is in a different position to the 57xx plus back head controls are different. Cheers

My brother who is not a model engineer sent me all the kits to build his class 57. After makin a start I soon realised why he couldnt build it. It seems that what he bought, was obviously a pile of bits swept up from the reject bin. As an example the crankshaft webs had not been pushed on square, the result being that the driving wheel wobbled by 1/8th of an inch. Crankpins were machined under size. Water pump piston or o ring wrong size. Cylinder covers not drilled or tapped for slide bars etc. I have now corrected these problems after spending a lot of time and effort, and will soon be in a position to hopefully run the chassis on air. What I havent got, and cannot find anywhere in the Modelworks instructions, is how to accurately set up the valve timing. I would be really gratefull if someone on this forum could tell me how to set up, the timing on an inside cylinder loco or even email me a copy of their instructions.

Hi John I am having another bash at building m/w`s 57xx took 4 evenings to get cross heads to slide correctly (shimming fileing etc) Do you have a boiler? And do you stilrequire valve timing instructions? Richard

Richard Sorry I dont have a boiler spare, what I have is a complete kit of parts that was swept up from the factory floor. I too had to shim the crossheads as well as remachine the crankpins. Before you go to far please check the concentricity of your crankshaft. I didnt and after loctiting on the wheels, I found there was a lateral wobble of the wheel of 1/8 inch. On inspection the crnkshaft webs hadnt been pinned on square to the stub axle. Also to note and this is very important if you havent already done it, but there are two identical numbered drawings showing the eccentric link set up in existence. Unfortunately I had the wrong one, so couldnt get the loco to run at all. The difference being that the eccentric straps on the rhs of the loco are placed 180 degrees opposite in the 2 drawings, once changed it just about managed to tick over. I actually timed the loco by making a union that went into each drain cock hole. A 1/8 " pipe goes to a clear bottle of water. Apply 10 psi to loco and turn wheels by hand, ( be carefull not to trap them ) when the slide valve cracks, bubbles appear in the bottle. After quite a few delicate adjustments loco now ticks over quite nicely. Not quite the scientific way, but it workedd for me. So thanks for your offer but I have now timed the loco.
