I recently purchased this 5" gauge Manor, built to a lovely standard, having a scale boiler, correct profile frames with front extensions as per prototype etc. Winning a silver medal at an exhibition in the 80's the engine was intensively run during the 80's and early 90's, winning a 'Heavy Haulage' competition on the way, somehow hauling 28 people non stop for 1 mile (3 laps of Bristol track) I couldn't quite believe it until I saw the certificate! Left unused for 17 years until I steamed it a couple of months ago it is fair to say that given the high level of wear she ran lovely, bit of citric acid in the injectors was all that was required for a couple of hours hassle free steaming after all those years sat idle, magic! I intend to use the engine at GL5 events next year and have now started stripping it down for a thorough overhaul, every single pin and bush is worn, the eccentrics shot and the rear axle boxes are 'interesting' I may post a picture of them at some point for the amusement factor. The paint was tired, looks better in pics than reality, heavily blistered and the lining worn away in many places etc. so a repaint is on the cards too, along with a nice new Dave Noble gauge frame and brake valve, a safety valve bonnet of the correct proportion and bogie wheels with the correct pattern of spokes. Enough to keep me out of trouble for the winter anyway! Will add further pics as the overhaul progresses if there is interest to see them. Wouldn't be complete of course without a renaming to 7820 'Dinmore Manor' so the plates are on order Cheers, Mike

The Dave Noble brake valve is the wrong one for a Manor. The Manor brake valve is a single cone ejector combined with a brake valve which exhausts thro a hollow stay in the boiler, this is the same as fitted to 5101, 31xx, 61xx, 81xx, 42xx, 43xx, 72xx and 28xx classes. The Dave Noble brake valve is just a brake valve and steam valve for a Hall, Grange, 47xx etc which have a 4 cone ejector mounted on the rh side of the firebox in front of the cab.

Quite aware of that, I have the full size single cone ejector from 7820 in my workshop for refurbishment at present along with other fittings The Noble one is however a far neater looking device than the one presently fitted hence me purchasing one...... The presently fitted one works in exactly the same way as the Noble one with a separate ejector, the boiler doesn't have the luxury of a hollow stay to exhaust the ejector through so this is routed separately to the smokebox.

Very interesting looking project, look forward to reading more as the overhaul progresses. Presumably the brake valve listed by Polly Model Engineering wouldn't be suitable either?

The Polly models brake valve is the Dave Noble item, the brake valve photo on the web site is a wrong pic as its actually of the full size 5199.

Just a thought get the boiler hydraulic test done whilst it is stripped so you can start again so to speak. Check the rules for out of frame testing!

Indeed, plan is to get the boiler tested in January before I put the cladding back on and get it painted ready for re-assembly. Machining of the new eccentric straps started yesterday evening, new pins and bushes for valve gear to follow after that. Hopefully have all that done within the next couple of weeks if I can find enough evenings in the workshop. Need to press on with it to have it ready for May with any luck.
