Hello again,
I dont know if anybody has suggested this before. Bathroom scales with plate glass top about 14 inches square bought cheaply from Tescos, Ideal for marking out on. You could even keep a eye on your weight as well.
Regards... Jack

Jack,
In a similar vein I went for a Wicks 12" marble floor tile. It's worth it just to see their faces when you buy only one but I can't beat your 14".
One quiet afternoon I added a simple raised wooden base and have gained a little bit of bench space back.

Over here kitchen worktops are in real marble. When they cut out the holes for sinks and hobs they have pieces left over that they are glad to sell on. 20 Euros go me a nice 24" x 18" piece
Plus I was given a piece about 10 in sq. which has an imperfection (black sploge). It works great as a surface plate and I do not worry about the colour.
Maybe your local stone mason has some offcuts as well? Worth a try.

HI All A chance converstion at a local tool merchant resulted in me getting an 18" square cast iron surface plate brand new for £40. Might be worth having a chat at your local tool stockist to see what they have lying around. Andy
